Arsenal 1-1 Manchester City: Premier League player ratings

Arsenal

David Raya Stood no chance with Haaland’s goal and did better with his second attempt. Largely a spectator. 6

Jurriën Timber Unusual to see him tested physically, but Doku’s pace and trickery were a handful to deal with. 6

Riccardo Calafiori Gallops all over the pitch with boundless energy. Can’t be accused of lacking effort. 7

William Saliba Could have picked an easier game to return from an ankle injury than having to face Haaland on song. 6

Gabriel Magalhães Left for dead by Haaland’s pace for the opening goal. Not at his typical commanding best. 6

Martín Zubimendi Grew in influence as the game went on, but could not keep his shot on target when the ball fell to him. 7

Declan Rice Never short of endeavour, as always, even if it was often wasted. Much more effective higher up the pitch. 6

Mikel Merino Lucky not to be punished after twice losing the ball on edge of own area. Far too ponderous at times. 4

Noni Madueke Arsenal’s main threat in the first half, although could not find the breakthrough. Surprisingly substituted at break. 7

Viktor Gyökeres Chasing shadows for most of the afternoon. Didn’t even look like having a shot, let alone scoring. 5

Leandro Trossard Surprise starter after impact off the bench in Bilbao. Was on the periphery for most of the game. 6

Subs: Eberechi Eze (for Merino, ht) Almost made an immediate impact off bench and provided brilliant pass for late equaliser 8; Bukayo Saka (for Madueke, ht) Added impetus down the right. Needs more time after injury 6; Gabriel Martinelli (for Timber, 80) Will be disappointed to have had to wait so long after midweek heroics, but made it count when it mattered 8; Ethan Nwaneri (for Trossard, 84) Should have been introduced earlier 6; Cristhian Mosquera (for Zubimendi, 90+5) n/a

Manchester City

Gianluigi Donnarumma Flapped at a couple of corners but got away with it. Slow to react to Martinelli’s run before it was too late. 6

Abdukodir Khusanov Looked shaky whenever Calafiori ran at him, and was taken off at half-time. 6

Rúben Dias Seemed to be enjoying doing battle with Gyökeres and won more than his fair share of duels. 7

Josko Gvardiol Never looks hurried on the ball and has the pace to cover when needed. Some crucial defensive blocks. 8

Nico O’Reilly Stood up well to the challenge of facing Madueke and then Saka, but tired as the game wore on. 6

Rodri Almost back to his imperious best after a long-term absence. City are a different team when he’s around. 8

Tijjani Reijnders Inch-perfect pass to set up the goal for Haaland, with whom he has already developed a strong understanding. 7

Bernardo Silva Deserved booking for petulant tackle on Gabriel and enjoyed playing the role of pantomime villain with home fans. 7

Phil Foden Quietly effective. Not much chance to get forward but put in a shift for the cause. 7

Erling Haaland Unstoppable in this form. Started and finished the move for his goal and even did his bit defensively too. 9

Jérémy Doku Caused problems whenever he found space. Set up Haaland for a one-on-one with superb run and through ball. 8

Subs: Matheus Nunes (for Khusanov, ht) Another reluctant right-back but did well 7; Nathan Aké (for Foden, 68) Guilty of playing Martinelli onside for equaliser 5; Nico González (for Haaland, 77) Little impact 5; John Stones (for O’Reilly, 87) n/a; Savinho (for Doku, 87) n/a.
