Arsenal close to signing Spanish midfielder

Arsenal are edging closer to landing the signature of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Spaniard has already agreed personal terms with the Gunners and talks are currently advanced with Sociedad over the payment terms.

A fee has been finalised between the clubs and discussions are now ongoing over the payment plan and possible performance add-ons.

Merino was in the stands for Sociedad’s 1-2 loss to Rayo Vallecano. Manager Imanol confirmed that he is speaking with other clubs.

Barcelona and Atletico have also expressed an interest in signing him, but Merino has made it clear that he would prefer to join Arsenal.

He has been persuaded to join the club after secret talks with manager Mikel Arteta. Merino could officially sign for Arsenal next week.

The former Newcastle United star can play in multiple midfield roles, but he is most comfortable from the number eight position.

His arrival should provide the Gunners with more assurance, considering he is one of the best in the world when it comes to winning duels.
