Arsenal cult hero admits he is open to returning to the Emirates in a coaching role – with the former fan favourite, 40, approaching retirement from professional football

Santi Cazorla revealed that he would consider a return to Arsenal, as the 40-year-old nears the end of his contract in Spain.

He currently plays for Real Oviedo in the Spanish second division but his current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2025.

After a 21-year professional career, his retirement is not expected to be far away – and the Spaniard is already considering his future career options after he hangs up his boots.

‘Yes, why not? Arsenal is my home,’ he said, after being asked whether he would consider a return to the Emirates.

‘I love the club and the people, so we will see in the future.

‘I don’t know [what role I would have]. I would have to think about that but something in football for sure, because that is what I love.’

Cazorla made 180 appearances for Arsenal between 2012 and 2018, winning two FA Cups and two FA Community Shields in that time.

His tenure with the club was spoiled by injuries in the latter stages. In his final two years, he made only 11 appearances.

Speaking to MailSport in 2022, Cazorla had similarly revealed that he wants to be involved with the Gunners in some capacity after he retires. 

‘Of course I would like to come back,’ he said. ‘I have to wait if the club thinks about me, if I can help in something – as a coach or a sporting director.’ 

During his years in north London, he forged a tight bond with Mikel Arteta, who played for the club between 2011 and 2016. Their wives grew close; their children would play together. 

‘One of the best friends I have in football,’ Cazorla added about the current Arsenal manager.

‘They helped my family so much so I want to say: Mikel, thank you.’
