Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus is set for a long layoff after suffering a serious knee injury in the FA Cup defeat by Manchester United

The Brazilian was forced off on a stretcher following a collision with Bruno Fernandes towards the end of the first half of the Gunners’ third round exit.

Jesus is set to undergo further tests on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury but there are already fears that he has suffered cartilage or ligament damage to his knee

He will likely miss the remainder of the season in another injury blow to Mikel Arteta, who is already without talisman Bukayo Saka

‘Big worry, that’s my feeling,’ said Arteta when asked about the forward’s injury after Sunday’s loss at the Emirates.

‘He had to come off on a stretcher, with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It’s not looking good. I think it is the other one [and not the knee he injured at the 2022 World Cup].

‘But the worrying factor is more the feeling that he had, when he had to come off, and the pain that he was in.’

The injury to Jesus leaves Arsenal with just one fit striker, with Kai Havertz set to continue to play a lead role in the side.

The German forward squandered some gilt-edged chances in the loss to United to continue Arsenal’s recent struggles in front of goal.

Arteta last week admitted that Arsenal could make moves in the transfer market this month – but will only sign players that ‘can impact immediately’.

‘Someone that can impact the team. Bringing bodies doesn’t help at all,’ the Gunners boss said of what he looks for in January.

‘It’s about somebody that can impact immediately with performance and they can bring something we don’t have. In this market it’s very, very difficult to achieve.

‘The circumstances changed because we have had some injuries of some big players. There’s always a possibility if we believe it’s somebody that’s going to make us much better.’
