Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has urged Ajax star Mika Godts to become more like Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku amid interest from Arsenal.
The 20-year-old has been a standout performer for the struggling Dutch giants for some time. Despite his youth, Godts has become a talismanic figure for Ajax, who are currently third in the Eredivisie table.
With 12 goals and 10 assists in 31 appearances so far this season, it is widely expected that Godts will become Ajax’s next major export. Indeed, Dutch media recently claimed that a move away this summer is inevitable.
Arsenal are said to have enquired about the young winger’s availability, but there is sure to be more interest in his services, especially if he goes to the World Cup with Belgium. Despite his form, this is not set in stone yet.
Incredibly, Godts has not played for his country since playing at the U19 level in 2023. This will surely change during the March break, but former Belgium star Toby Alderweireld has urged the youngster to learn from Man City star Jeremy Doku, who is currently ahead of him in the pecking order.
Alderweireld: Godts needs to become more like Doku
The former Spurs defender told ESPN after Godts’ brace against Fortuna Sittard: “Of the Belgians at Ajax, I think Mika has the best chance of making the World Cup squad, even though we have a lot of attacking options with Jeremy Doku, who is world-class, Dodi Lukebakio, and Leandro Trossard, who can also play on the left.
“If Mika can maintain his form, he could easily be in the starting lineup in March. He’s not always looking for his man, but is increasingly choosing his moments better. He’s playing more directly and making the right decisions more often.
“He should take a cue from Doku in that regard. Don’t pass someone for the sake of passing, but only when necessary. That ultimately leads to better numbers. Goals and assists, that’s what you need.”
Alderweireld believes that if Godts doesn’t make the squad in March, Rudi Garcia will surely not include him in the World Cup squad. “The Ajax players have to hope they’re in the squad in March. Otherwise, their chances of a World Cup are even slimmer,” he said.
