Arsenal managed to achieve exactly what they set out to do this summer: upgrade their team.

Article continues under the video

The Gunners have improved each campaign under the tenure of Mikel Arteta and that is partly due to their shrewd activity in the transfer market under him.

In the summer of 2023, Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Declan Rice from West Ham for €116.6 million, while Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya (loan) also arrived as the Gunners spent big after missing out on the English top flight title.

In fact, the club haven’t been shy in splashing the cash recently to try and fight the might of Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League, and with an injection of Champions League money, they spent fairly big yet again in the summer of 2024.

David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino all arrived on permanent deals, while Raheem Sterling and goalkeeper Neto joined on loan.

As always with such a big club, the Arsenal transfer rumour mill continues to be in full swing, with Arteta always keen to add to the talent he has already brought to the club.

Osimhen deal struck one minute after midnight

Agent George Gardi has revealed Victor Osimhen‘s move to Napoli was conceived seconds after his deal with Chelsea fell through on Deadline Day.

He told TMW: “The deal was born at midnight and one minute on Friday with the European markets closed. I saw that Victor had not left, that there was a particular situation in Naples. I asked the club if they were willing to let the player go on loan, they gave me the opening and I immediately contacted the Turkish club to tell them that it would be an unmissable opportunity but to get it done quickly!”

Arsenal had also been following the Nigeria forward.

West Ham turned down Sterling deal

West Ham turned down the chance to sign Raheem Sterling before deadline day.

The winger was unceremoniously dumped from the Chelsea squad ahead of the first game of the season against Man City and told to find a new club.

He eventually completed a surprise loan move to Arsenal, but that only came after West Ham didn’t pursue a deal, believing the player to be an unrealistic target. (Independent)

Petit highlights transfer window mistake

Emmanuel Petit reckons Arsenal made a mistake in not signing a new centre-forward.

“They’re missing presence up front,” the World Cup winner told Squawka.

“Kai Havertz always tries to come deeper in midfield to link up with the midfield players, sometimes he’s asking for the ball behind the defenders. But that’s not enough. This isn’t his natural capacity. So they need someone up front, a typical striker that can convert chances. You get the feeling sometimes that Arsenal are predictable for the opponents when they are not playing well. So they need a Plan B and at the moment they don’t have one.”
