Arsenal will be looking to frustrate Carlo Ancelotti’s reigning champions Real Madrid as the two sides meet at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League

The business end of the season is fast approaching as we enter the quarter-finals of the Champions League with Arsenal welcoming reigning champions Real Madrid to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners will be keen to establish themselves as the front runners in this tie especially as the bookies have priced them as the slight-favourites going into this tie whereas Real Madrid always seem to make this competition their own personal play-thing in recent years regardless of domestic performances.

Both sides will be going into this match frustrated with their respective performances and results in the domestic scene at the weekend but a chance to spice things up on the biggest stage of club football will certainly be enough to motivate these two clubs.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has not faced Arsenal since he was Everton boss but left Goodison Park with back-to-back wins for the Toffees while Arteta was starting out as a Premier League manager and will be keen to add to his seven wins in 13 meetings in his managerial career.

The Gunners comfortably saw off PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16 9-3 on aggregate which included a ridiculous 7-1 thrashing at the Philips Stadion in the first leg. Mikel Arteta’s side have not reached this stage of the competition since 2009/10 season – two years before the Spaniard joined the north London club as a player – but will be looking to improve on their form drastically after recent setbacks.

In their last five matches in all competitions, the Gunners had to clawback a point at Old Trafford against a mediocre Man United side and could not get all three points at the weekend against Everton as Arteta sit 11 points behind Liverpool with the Premier League title race all but sealed. However, despite their injury concerns they still find themselves in a good position going into this match and the return of Bukayo Saka will do nothing but boost morale in the dressing room.

Meanwhile, the reigning champions will be looking to maintain their impressive feat in the knockout stages after seeing off two heavyweights already. A disappointing group stage campaign forced Los Blancos to a knockout play-off round with Pep Guardiola’s Man City which they saw off comfortably 6-3 on aggregate before hard-fought Madrid Derby in the round of 16 forced the two sides to decide on penalties at the Metropolitano.

Despite the firepower up front, Madrid are struggling to secure big wins and in fact in their last five wins in all competitions have all finished with a single goal lead. Last time out, they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Valencia in a line up which included Kylian Mbappe and Viniciu Junior – who missed a penalty to give the hosts an early lead.

The two sides have only met twice before on the Champions League – back when Arsene Wenger guided the Gunners to a final where they won 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a goal from Thierry Henry at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Arsenal vs Real Madrid

I fully expect this to be an end-to-end match with plenty of opportunities from each side as Arsenal look to maintain their – albeit modest – unbeaten run against Madrid.

With star boy Saka back in the mix I can see him giving plenty of chances and frustrating Madrid’s makeshift defence and if Fran Garcia starts at left-back again then he will be for a hard 90-minute shift, if Ancelotti has not lost patience on him like he did against Valencia that is.

Elsewhere, Mbappe will be looking to improve on his form of late. Four goals against City over two legs before blanking against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid would have left him frustrated by his own performance despite his side’s progression. The French captain will have far more opportunities against an Arsenal side who will be looking for a quick solution with Gabriel out for the rest of the season too.
