Aston Villa fans have joked that Thomas Frank supports Arsenal in a hilarious new chant after the Tottenham manager was spotted drinking from a coffee cup with the Gunners logo on it.

Frank risked the fury of Spurs’ supporters when he appeared before Wednesday’s match against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium holding an espresso cup which showed off the emblem of Tottenham’s fiercest rivals.

The Spurs boss became the subject of ridicule on Saturday during Aston Villa’s FA Cup third round tie in north London, as away supporters ruthlessly used his coffee cup embarrassment to goad the home team.

‘Thomas Frank is an Arsenal fan,’ Villa fans chanted to the tune of Go West by the Village People.

The teasing chant came during the first half, which ended with the visiting side 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers.

It was understood that the controversial coffee cup was left by a member of Arsenal’s party last weekend after the Gunners defeated Bournemouth to climb six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

A grinning Frank, appearing to see the funny side, was photographed holding the espresso cup before kick-off and later attempted to distance himself from the embarrassment.

Suggesting he had no idea there was an Arsenal crest on the cup, Frank said: ‘Definitely, I have not noticed it. I think it’s fair to say that we’re not winning every single football match so it would be absolutely, completely stupid of me to take a cup with Arsenal (on it). Is there anyone thinking I’ve done that? All the staff has done it.

‘They’ve been in the changing room, the game before us. It’s normal to take a cup, give me an espresso, I do that before every game. I think actually it’s a little bit sad in football that I need to be asked a question about that.

‘I think we’re definitely going in the wrong direction if we need to worry about me having a cup with another logo of another club, of course I’ll never do that. That’s extremely stupid.’
