Jhon Durán’s goal proved the difference as Aston Villa beat Bayern Munich 1-0 to hand Vincent Kompany his first defeat in charge of the German giants.
Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat since Vincent Kompany took over as coach in the summer as they went down 1-0 to Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Jhon Durán scored in the 79th minute, lifting the ball over Manuel Neuer to give Villa a sensational win.
The German visitors started the game in full control, with Joshua Kimmich pulling the strings in midfield. Meanwhile, Villa lurked on the counter and Ollie Watkins caused Dayot Upamecano plenty of problems with his runs up front.
Villa looked increasingly dangerous as the half wore on, and they thought they had taken the lead on 22 minutes when Pau Torres slotted the ball over the line, only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review showed Jacob Ramsey was offside in the build-up.
Three minutes later, Villa threatened again when Alphonso Davies could only direct Watkins’ cross to the feet of Amadou Onana, whose shot was straight at Manuel Neuer.
Bayern’s best chance of the first half came in the 38th minute when Michael Olise unleashed a superb long-range shot that Emiliano Martinez brilliantly tipped over the bar.
Vincent Kompany’s men controlled proceedings from the start of the second half but struggled to break down the Villa defence, although Michael Olise came close with two shots that were both blocked by Pau Torres in the 57th minute.
Bayern continued to search for the opener, but it was Villa who broke the deadlock out of nowhere in the 79th minute. Jhon Duran was played in behind the Bayern defence and unleashed a quick shot that sailed over Manuel Neuer, who was well out of his goal, and into the net.
The Germans, now desperate to salvage a point, came close with a few minutes remaining when Martinez pulled off a fine save to deny Serge Gnabry. Harry Kane almost snatched a late point for Bayern with a header in stoppage time, but Martinez produced another stunning save.
Ultimately, it wasn’t to be for Bayern and Kompany, who slumped to a shock defeat in Birmingham.
