Shameful scenes preceded Atletico Madrid‘s Champions League clash against Inter Milan on Wednesday, as several home fans were spotted singing racist chants about Vinicius Jr outside the Spanish club’s stadium.
Vinicius Jr, who plays for Atletico’s fierce rivals Real Madrid, has been the target of racist abuse for several years, with a video emerging just last week of the Brazilian being racially abuse by young fans on a recent visit to Morocco.
Moments before Atletico’s Champions League second leg against Inter at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium in Madrid, footage emerged on social media of fans loudly referring to the forward as a ‘chimpanzee’.
The Spanish fans were heard chanting: ‘Ale, ale, ale Vinicius, chimpance.’
Vinicius Jr was disgracefully ridiculed with monkey chants and gestures by Atletico fans during the Madrid derby in 2021 and urged for authorities to intervene amid his ongoing battle against racist abuse.

LaLiga collated audio and video evidence of the offensive chanting before filing a report to Spain’s Commission against Violence, which has the authority to close Atletico’s stadium.
After launching an investigation, Spanish prosecutors concluded that the actions and behaviours ‘did not constitute a crime‘ because they ‘lasted only a few seconds’ and occurred in an atmosphere of ‘maximum rivalry’, referencing the ferocity of the Madrid derby.
They did acknowledge the chants were ‘unpleasant’ and ‘disrespectful’, however.
Atletico could now find themselves in serious legal trouble after chanting racist songs about Vinicius Jr ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie, as the Real Madrid forward has nothing to do with the context of the match.
Should a new investigation be launched, it cannot be claimed that fans were influenced by the context of a ‘massive rivalry’, with Real not playing again until their away trip to Osasuna in LaLiga on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid forward Morata called for fans making racist chants in stadiums to be banned for life back in 2023. He told ESPN: ‘It’s unacceptable and inexplicable. It should never have a place in football.
‘The first time a person does that in a stadium he should be banned for life because many times people go to watch a sporting event often with children.
‘I think it should be a reason to expel them because it’s a sport, there can be a lot of rivalry but it’s football.’
