Barcelona are losing €2m in every home game – here’s why

Barcelona were supposed to have moved back to Camp Nou by now after using the Montjuic stadium as their home for the last two years but the La Liga giants are racking up a costly bill due to delays in the procedure.

Camp Nou has been under construction since the end of the 2022-23 season, with Barca spending their last two campaigns at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuic.

The refurbishment was due to be finished by the end of 2024 but, nearly ten months later, Barcelona are no closer to returning to their iconic stadium despite plans to have it available for the new campaign.

Barca have played their first three games of the season away from home, with the fixture against Valencia on September 14 pencilled in as the club’s first game back at Camp Nou.

However, further delays have led to Barca once again finding themselves homeless, particularly with the Montjuic venue being unavailable this weekend, leading to the game against Valencia being played at the Johan Cruyff Stadium inside the club’s training ground in front of a maximum of 6,000 spectators.

With Barca yet to receive the final construction certificate issued by the city, the club have been forced to foot a bill of more than €2 million for every match they are unable to play at Camp Nou.

The numbers behind Barcelona’s costly delays

Barca expect to receive around €2.4m from matchday revenue if the game was being held in Montjuic, however the sum for the match against Valencia is likely to net just €370,000, according to Foot Mercato.

The club will also be required to start paying interest on the €1.45 billion loan from Goldman Sachs and its investors used to renovate Camp Nou, which will amount to €44m to be paid in December and more than doubling to €94m in a year’s time.

Barca’s sponsorship with Spotify for Camp Nou’s naming rights have also dropped to €5m until they return to the stadium, at which point it will rise to €20m for 20 years.

Without a return to Camp Nou, Barcelona’s limited match day income could lead to further financial problems for the Catalans, with no end in sight as frustrations continue to grow.
