Barcelona have lodged a request with a Spanish court to be able to register Dani Olmo in January, according to Spanish media.
The Blaugrana are scrambling to secure the eligibility of their marquee summer signing. Barcelona had to get creative to be able to register Olmo in the first place, utilising Andreas Christensen’s injury and even altering LaLiga’s rules, but this was only a temporary measure.
With the turn of the year approaching, Barcelona are increasingly facing a reality in which Olmo could theoretically leave them on a free transfer in January due to a clause in his contract.

The deadline by which to register Olmo for the rest of the season is December 31 but so far Barcelona have made next to no progress on that front despite landing a lucrative new Nike deal.
January sales would come too late to influence Olmo’s registration as Barcelona would then have to start the process of registering him all over again. This could be a problem due to the fact that the 26-year-old would have to obtain a new LaLiga license while players are only allowed to have one license per season.
Barcelona go to court
In light of this, Barcelona have now taken the matter to court to request an extension of the registration window into January as a ‘precautionary measure,’ according to MARCA.
A final verdict on the matter is expected to arrive later this week, but it is a move that showcases the club’s desperation despite public proclamation of confidence that the registration process would go smoothly.

“We have filed some lawsuits, but without any bitterness, because we want to have all the possibilities to register the players (if they give us the injunction, it would be done), appealing to the fact that the salary margin that [injured goalkeeper Marc-Andre] Ter Stegen leaves us will be enough for Dani and Pau [Victor],” president Joan Laporta recently said.
Should Barcelona be allowed to register Olmo in January, it would give them time to offload players to free up more potential salary space.
