The former Hertha BSC, Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich and Kaiserslautern player senses a tough season awaits for the German capital club.

Former Germany international Mario Basler is skeptical about 1.FC Union Berlin’s chances of success in the 2025/26 campaign.

“It will be a battle against relegation until the last matchday,” said Basler, predicting the season for Union on his podcast ‘Basler ballert’.

In the previous two seasons, the Köpenickers had only managed to climb out of the drop zone of the Bundesliga table late in the season.

This time, too, Union will have to “stretch itself out a lot to stay in the league,” the 30-cap German midfielder said.

The 1996 EUROs champion estimates Union have a “worrying” relegation probability equating to “more than 50 percent”.

Basler lists their opening fixture schedule for the Bundesliga as “brutal,” and expects a “very quick” dismissal of coach Steffen Baumgart.
