Bayern Munich vs Eintracht Frankfurt preview: Back-to-back Meisterschale ties for Bayern

Bayern Munich have a tough test against their “Angstgegner” (bogey team) Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday in the Bundesliga, in a bid for the league leaders to avenge a 5-1 loss at the Deutsche Bank Park last season.

Bayern Munich were fortunate in midweek to go through to the last-16 as a late goal from Alphonso Davies was needed to get past a solid Celtic side.

The tough games don’t end however as they face third in the Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt after last week’s title fight against Leverkusen.

Harry Kane was subbed off against Celtic at half time with injury and will be a doubt for the Frankfurt match. 

However, Bayern should stay solid at the back as Manuel Neuer has kept a clean sheet in each of his last two Bundesliga ties.

Missing the Englishman might still prove an issue, as the record champions’ only loss this season (against Mainz in December) came when he was absent.

Ahead of the huge tie against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said: “We’re playing against the team in third. They’ve done a lot right this season and there are a lot of players at Frankfurt now that are very close to taking the next step.”

Harry Kane is a doubt with a calf issue and backup keeper Daniel Peretz is doubtful with a kidney problem.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt did not have to play in midweek, as they automatically qualified for the last-16 of the Europa League where they will face Ajax.

Frankfurt, however, are seven games unbeaten in the Bundesliga since their upturn in form since the start of the year (their longest run under coach Dino Toppmöller).

Currently third, Frankfurt are looking to achieve their highest position in the Bundesliga since 1993 under Horst Heese.

Evenly matched in recent ties with Bayern Munich, Frankfurt have drawn two and won one in their last five Bundesliga outings with the southern German side.

Ahead of the crucial tie against Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmöller said: “We’re facing an extremely powerful side, but we are travelling to Munich in third place and are having a great season.”

Team news

Robin Koch is out with a shoulder injury and both Éric Dina Ebimbe and Igor Matanović are injured with a calf and foot injury respectively.

Also, Mario Götze is a doubt with illness.
