Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany decided to rest Joshua Kimmich for Saturday’s 6-2 victory over SC Freiburg.

The 30-year-old central midfielder had sustained a capsule injury in his right ankle during the international break, and Bayern didn’t want to take any chances on him ahead of their Champions League clash with Arsenal on Wednesday.

Speaking in the mixed zone (via tz.de) after the Freiburg win, Kimmich sounded optimistic about featuring against the London side.

“I’m getting better,” he said.

When asked if he would be able to play against Arsenal with tape on his ankle, Kimmich responded firmly:

“Definitely with it!”

Both Bayern and Arsenal have won all four of their league-phase matches in the Champions League so far this season.
