There appears to be several factors contributing to the divide in opinions in the Bavarian club’s hierarchy.
Uli Hoeneß’ comment to Südeutsche Zeitung where he said he “strongly recommends filling out the squad with a loan player who is signed until June 2026,” has caused some confusion.
Bayern Munich’s supervisory board member has left sporting management (Max Eberl and Christoph Freund) puzzled after they met requirements to save money and cut the squad.
The report suggests a conflict of interest has arisen. Eberl and Co. need to invest and short-term success to survive, but the the supervisory board don’t want to spend fortunes on players they’re not fully convinced about.
So, for once, it happens that Hoeneß sees things the same way as Lothar Matthäus: It’s better not to sign anyone and instead give the young players a chance.
Meanwhile, Eberl notes the losses of Müller, Sané, Coman, Tel, and the injured Musiala. With only Luis Díaz and youthful names coming in, Eberl demands more squad depth to compete for titles.
This dilemma explains why reports suggest Bayern only want Christopher Nkunku on loan: The sporting management desire success and depth; the strategic department thinks about finances and the future.
Bayern bosses are planning a major squad overhaul for next summer. Decisions will be made as to which of the players with expiring contracts (Gnabry, Goretzka, Guerreiro) should leave or stay with a pay cut.
Furthermore, which desired players should join the team, and whether the gap-filling loan player, who is supposed to arrive in the next 10 days, might then be signed permanently or let go.
