Benjamin Hübner has officially been named the new assistant coach of the German national team, replacing Sandro Wagner in Julian Nagelsmann’s staff.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the appointment on Saturday morning. Hübner will link up with the national team after the Nations League Finals (June 4-8), formally joining on July 1. His initial contract runs for three years.

“It’s a great honour to work for the national team,” said the 35-year-old, who most recently served as assistant coach at TSG Hoffenheim.

As a player, Hübner spent three years at Hoffenheim under Nagelsmann, a period he says had a “major impact” on both his playing career and development as a coach.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started on the pitch in September and, of course, to giving everything for the World Cup next year,” Hübner added.

Nagelsmann praised the appointment, calling Hübner a “true team player who has always put the success of the team above his own interests.

Sandro Wagner will leave his role following the Nations League final tournament, reportedly to take over at Augsburg.

DFB sporting director Rudi Völler had already hinted at Hübner’s arrival on Friday, citing his proven qualities as an assistant and his strong rapport with players.

“His understanding of the game and the needs of the players is excellent,” said Völler. “The trust between him and Julian is very strong, thanks to their successful time together in Hoffenheim. Andreas Rettig and I were thoroughly impressed during our talks with him.”

Hübner retired from professional football in December 2022 due to persistent injuries. He quickly transitioned into coaching, leading Hoffenheim’s U19S to a domestic double before being promoted to the first-team coaching staff in early 2024.
