Boban: UEFA ‘understand little about football’ after naming Inter MOTM vs. Bayern Munich

Alessandro Bastoni was UEFA’s MOTM in Inter’s 2-1 win over Bayern Munich, but Zvonimir Boban argued that Lautaro Martinez or Marcus Thuram deserved it more: ‘They understand very little about football.’

The Nerazzurri secured a memorable 2-1 away win at Bayern Munich on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Inter defender Bastoni received UEFA’s MOTM Award, but ex-Milan star Boban disagreed with their choice.

“They understand very little about football, with all the respect due to Bastoni. Giving the award to a defender after such a win made absolutely no sense,” the former Croatian star told Sky Sport Italia via Fanpage.

“It would have never happened when I was the head of UEFA football,” he added, smiling.

Boban felt Lautaro Martinez or Thuram deserved the award more than their teammate.

“They’ve never played this way for Inter, perhaps never in their lives,” he argued.

“The attacking duo was incredible, obviously without taking anything away from the whole team for a complete performance. The strikers were just fantastic, unbelievable. Mkhitaryan and Barella read the game excellently and made several classy passes. Perhaps, they were unnoticed because the strikers were so dominant. I was impressed by their personality.”

Ex-Juventus, Roma and Milan coach Fabio Capello agreed with Boban.

“If it had to be a defender, perhaps, Carlos Augusto [deserved it] for the assist. I adore Bastoni, he’s got class and played a great game, but I would have voted for Lautaro.”

Inter will host Bayern Munich at San Siro for the second leg next week, on Wednesday, April 16.

The Nerazzurri were the first team to beat Bayern Munich at home in the last four years. Simone Inzaghi’s men remain the only Serie A club still running for three competitions, being in the Coppa Italia semifinals and sitting at the top of the Serie A table.
