Borussia Dortmund moving forward with potential Hummels return

Sport Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund’s plan to bring Mats Hummels back on a short-term deal for the Club World Cup is becoming increasingly concrete.

Earlier this month, reports emerged that Borussia Dortmund were considering bringing Mats Hummels back on a short-term deal for the Club World Cup.

Now, according to Sport Bild, the Black and Yellows are preparing to take the next step by initiating contact with the veteran defender.

The 36-year-old, whose contract with AS Roma expires this summer, is reportedly very enthusiastic about the idea of ending his career in black and yellow.

As a result, the final decision is likely to rest with Dortmund. Bringing back the club legend would bolster their defensive depth – especially with Nico Schlotterbeck sidelined – but Sport Bild notes there are concerns over whether Hummels would be content with a potential role on the bench.

Regardless of whether the short-term comeback happens, Hummels is expected to return to Dortmund in some capacity down the line. According to the report, that much has already been assured.

While the 2014 World Cup winner is said to be considering a coaching career, Sport Bild also speculates he could step into a leadership role off the pitch – potentially as Dortmund’s head of first-team football, a position previously held by Sebastian Kehl before his promotion to sporting director.
