According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund are planning to extend head coach Niko Kovač’s contract ahead of the new season.

When Niko Kovač was appointed Borussia Dortmund head coach back in February, he signed a short-term contract running until the end of the 2025/26 season.

However, after impressing in his first half-season in charge and leading Dortmund to a fourth-place finish, the Croatian coach is now expected to be rewarded with a contract extension.

According to Bild, the club want to extend Kovač’s deal by at least one year before the start of the new season.

“We deliberately gave Niko a contract until 2026 back in February,” said BVB’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, in a recent interview.

“Niko is not a firefighter. We wanted to make it clear to the players that he would still be here next season and that they really had to follow him.

“We discussed the timeline for the coming months and agreed that we would calmly address everything after the Club World Cup.”
