Bundesliga Matchday 7 concluded with the meeting of VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen. Bremen fell behind early but goals from Weiser, Agu, Ducksch, and Grüll completed the comeback while Patrick Wimmer saw red for Wolfsburg.
Bremen roared out of the blocks with Marco Grüll threatening early on, however Grbara managed to deal with the Austrian adequately. The hosts grew into the occasion and constructed the opening goal through Tiago Tomas on 19 minutes. After a rather chaotic Maxi Arnold corner which Zetterer flapped at, Vavro fired the ball into Lynen which broke to the Portuguese striker to bundle over the line with his heel.
Die Wölfe looked set to take the lead into the dressing rooms until Bremen restored parity in the fifth minute of added time. Picking up the half space to the left of the box, Ducksch crossed centrally for the onrushing Mitchell Weiser. The wing-back, who has been deployed more centrally this season, slipped in to flick the ball over Grbara who was rooted to his goal-line.
Inside six second-half minutes, Bremen had completed the turnaround. It was a beautifully constructed move with a pinch of luck involved as Ducksch and Grüll combined to test Grbara. The rebound fell kindly for Felix Agu who smashed the ball towards goal, where Grbara greatly reduced its speed but couldn’t prevent the ball rolling into the net. Shortly after the hour mark Bremen established a 3-1 lead. Weiser cut down the right and found Ducksch whose volley nestled in the bottom left corner.
Things went from bad to worse for Wolfsburg who were reduced to ten men with just over 20 minutes remaining. Grüll turned in midfield and set off before Patrick Wimmer scythed his fellow countryman down. Arbiter Daniel Schlager went straight for the red card. The aforementioned Grüll added a fourth minutes later as his shot from an acute angle caught Gerhardt and deceived Grbara. Joakim Mæhle managed to reduce the deficit with a fine strike cushioned him with the aid of the post, but ultimately too little too late.
