Key events
That’s your lot, folks. Thanks for reading today’s Clockwatch. Those desirous of more up-to-the-minute Premier League action should hotfoot it over to Barry Glendenning. Anon!
Post-match postbag. “The sterile possession and the passing across the box is one of the reasons why Diogo Jota is such an important player, as he is prepared to run through the block to punch holes into it. It is therefore notable that Nuñez’s first goal came from Alexander-Arnold breaking past the forwards to do precisely that” – Andy (not that one) Flintoff
“What an ingeniously scientific way for Darwin to demonstrate that Bees can get stung” – Peter Oh
“Were today’s 3 o’clock kick-offs sponsored by O2?” – Emily Cullen
MATCH REPORT: Brentford 0-2 Liverpool. David Hytner was at the Gtech, and here’s his report on a potentially pivotal moment in the title race.
MATCH REPORT: Leicester City 0-2 Fulham. Oh Ruud.
MATCH REPORT: West Ham United 0-2 Crystal Palace. Jacob Steinberg was at the London Stadium to see Jean-Philippe Mateta put Palace’s capital rivals to the sword.
Darwin Nunez scored just his third and fourth goals of the Premier League season this afternoon. So he’s not on this list. Yet. Late-season charge ahoy? Meanwhile Justin Kluivert and Jean-Philippe Mateta move on up.
MATCH REPORT: Newcastle United 1-4 Bournemouth. Louise Taylor was at St James’ Park to witness Justin Kluivert make merry on his pop Patrick’s old stomping ground.

FULL TIME: Brentford 0-2 Liverpool. That’s a massive result for Liverpool. Darwin Nunez’s dramatic late intervention could have a huge bearing on the title race. The three points, obviously. The added pressure on Arsenal, who were dreaming of closing the gap at the top. But perhaps most importantly, it may have cleared Liverpool’s pipes. The league leaders were staring down the barrel of a third Premier League draw in a row, six points dropped in short order. But now the picture looks very different. Blip over? Ipswich at Anfield next.
FULL TIME: Brentford 0-2 Liverpool
Darwin Nunez, so often the subject of derision, is Liverpool’s last-gasp hero at the Gtech! A sickener for Brentford, and Arsenal as well. What a difference that’s made to the top of the table! Arsenal’s early-evening game with Villa now even more important.
FULL TIME: Leicester City 0-2 Fulham
Another seven-game sequence here: Leicester have now lost seven on the bounce. Huge problems for Ruud van Nistelrooy.
FULL TIME: West Ham United 0-2 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace are now seven unbeaten away from home, a new top-flight club record. Graham Potter grim-faced.
Brentford 0-2 Liverpool. Darwin Nunez loves it at the Gtech all right. That delightful dink last season, and now an injury-time double whammy that could have huge implications in the title race!
GOAL! Brentford 0-2 Liverpool (Nunez 90+3)
… and they say Darwin Nunez isn’t a born goalscorer. He missed a big chance earlier, but now he’s got two in added time! Harvey Elliott with the assist.
Brentford 0-1 Liverpool. That was the first of four added minutes. But wait, what’s this?
GOAL! Brentford 0-1 Liverpool (Nunez 90+1)
… so having said that, Darwin Nunez breaks the deadlock in the first minute of added time! Liverpool delight. Brentford heartbroken, and Arsenal won’t be too chuffed either. Unless there’s some more late drama up the other end, of course!
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Brentford took a point from the champions Manchester City during the week; they’re very close to denying the league leaders a couple of precious points now too. “Regarding Tim Pearson’s comment, are teams not allowed to have a dip in form without everything being questioned?” asks Jack B. “Plus Brentford are a formidable team at home who stunt the very best.”
GOAL! West Ham United 0-2 Crystal Palace (Mateta 89 pen)
Jean-Philippe Mateta puts Eddie Nketiah through. Łukasz Fabiański brings him down. Penalty, and Mateta secures the points for Palace! Only just, mind, Fabiański coming very close to making up for his mistake … but the ball squirms under his body.
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold has a dig from distance. Not too far away.
Full time in the Bundesliga, where leaders Bayern Munich have beaten Wolfsburg 3-2. An 88th-minute goal for Mohammed Amoura – his second of the afternoon – gave Wolfburg some late hope, but the Bavarians hung on. They go seven clear of the champions Bayer Leverkusen, who play Borussia Monchengladbach in the late kick-off.
RED CARD: Mavropanos (West Ham United)
West Ham United 0-1 Crystal Palace. Konstantinos Mavropanos walks for a second yellow card, both issued for fouls on the Crystal Palace goalscorer Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Cody Gakpo miskicks, and another big chance for Liverpool goes begging. Their attempt ticker up to 30 now. Just six on target, and no goals scored. “Are we seeing the gradual Arsenalization of Liverpool as the season unfolds, a regression from heavy metal football to sterile adult contemporary?” asks Tim Pearson. “Arne Slot received much praise early doors for a more patient team, prepared to vary the pace of the game in search of victory. Yet with this current run of iffy form we’re seeing more and more passing around the opponent’s box, all possession without penetration, confounded by a low block. In other words, we’re increasingly seeing an Arsenal clone.”
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Half-chances for Kevin Schade and Christian Nørgaard. Then up the other end, Darwin Nunez skies a shot. “Do you think we might be getting an insight into Mo’s transfer mindset?” wonders Jeremy Boyce. “Early-leaver syndrome ? Vibes subconsciously extending to the rest of the team? If so, he should go now if they want to win the league. Management is such a simple game, eh?”
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Now it’s Alexis Mac Allister’s turn to head wide. It’s not happening for the league leaders, whose advantage at the top could be cut to two points tonight, should this scoreline become a result and Arsenal beat Villa later on. Speaking of which, the teams are in at the Emirates, and Barry Glendenning is all over them.
GOAL! Leicester City 0-2 Fulham (Traore 68)
Adama Traore side-foots Fulham into a two-goal lead, and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s relegation-haunted side are heading for a seventh straight league defeat.
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Darwin Nunez is on for Liverpool, Luis Diaz making way, and he’s just missed a glorious chance, sending a close-range header off target. Darwin is as Darwin does. To be fair, he’s still in moral credit for his life’s work at the Gtech.
Anyway, that Acme slide whistle of 3pm fame. “I missed all the first half inaction due to clicking on the Acme slide whistle youtube ad,” writes John Magee. “This immediately sent me to youtube and a merry 45 minutes of reminiscences watching The Clangers.” Glad to have provided some entertainment one way or another. Again, I defy you to play this just once.
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Brentford appeal for a penalty, a hand-ball against Ibrahima Konaté. Nothing doing. Then Luis Diaz goes over in the environs of Mark Flekken, but there’s no chance of that being given either.
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. According to Opta, Liverpool have had 24 attempts at goal so far, to Brentford’s five. Just five of those 24 have been on target, though. Shades of their impotent second-half domination of Nottingham Forest during the week. All of these squandered opportunities are threatening to derail their title bid.
GOAL! Sheffield United 2-0 Norwich City (Burrows 60 pen). A second goal for Harrison Burrows, this time from the penalty spot, and the Blades are heading to the top of the Championship table this evening.
Brentford 0-0 Liverpool. Still no goal at the Gtech, though. The pressure building on the league leaders, who at this rate will be giving Arsenal real hope going into their 5.30pm kick-off against Aston Villa.
While we’re on a goalscoring tip, there’s been a third goal for Bayern Munich against Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga leaders go 3-1 up, Leon Goretzka scoring his second of the afternoon. For the record, Michael Olise notched the other for FC Hollywood this afternoon.
GOAL! Leicester City 0-1 Fulham (Smith Rowe 48)
… and in London Bus news, another goal comes along in short order. Emile Smith Rowe adds to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s problems at the King Power. A seventh Premier League loss in a row looming for the Foxes as things now stand.
GOAL! West Ham United 0-1 Crystal Palace (Mateta 48)
Goals: we have them! Well, a goal, anyway. Jean-Philippe Mateta opens the scoring at the London Stadium and the Graham Potter honeymoon is officially over. Ian Sargeant (4.01pm) with the fate-tempting assist.
Second halves upcoming, then. Goals, please! Actually, scrub that: a goal, please! Any goal, please! “Liverpool replaced Henderson with Endo San,” quips AA BB.
