Bryan Mbeumo in drastic U-turn after Man Utd failure to meet transfer criteria

Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo is on the move after a standout season in the Premier League where he scored 20 goals for the Bees, with a £60million move to Manchester United now on the table

Manchester United are hoping to make Bryan Mbeumo their second signing of the summer after his standout season at Brentford. The Cameroon star scored 20 times last term to attract interest from a host of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Newcastle, Liverpool and Tottenham have all been monitoring Mbeumo, with all three able to offer European football. The Toon’s finish in the top five and Spurs’ Europa League success ensures the pair will both be in next season’s Champions League, along with the champions.

That’s something United, who finished 15th in the Premier League – an unwanted record – and were beaten by Spurs in the Europa final, cannot match.

And it had been suggested that Mbeumo’s desire to play European football next term would mean a switch to Old Trafford was not in the offing. Certainly, Newcastle had felt they were in pole position to land the 25-year-old because of it, with Spurs very much as outsiders and Liverpool favouring other targets.

However, after United kicked off their summer transfer window with the £62.5m signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, Ruben Amorim and the Red Devils’ hierarchy promptly turned attention to the second No.10 he is hoping to field next term: Mbeumo.

It promptly emerged that Mbeumo had changed his mind and only wants a move to United to be part of Amorim’s United rebuild. Mbeumo informed Newcastle he only wants to move to Manchester.

Sources close to the Magpies insist he’ll be getting paid well above their pay scale by choosing not to join their European fight next term, but they weren’t interested in breaking their salary structure. Mbeumo earns a basic £45k-a-week at Brentford and is looking to earn four or five times that amount.

United still need to negotiate a transfer fee with Brentford but that isn’t expected to be a problem.

The Bees business model means they are happy to cash in on their prized asset while his stock is at an all-time high – taking the cash and putting it towards the next young stars who will look to make a splash at the Gtech Community Stadium before inevitably being sold on for big profit.
