Mainz ended an 11-month winless run at Mewa Arena with a combative 2-1 victory over fellow relegation-threatened side Heidenheim. The 05ers are unbeaten in four matches under their new coach, Urs Fischer.
“It was almost to be expected that this would be a nerve-racking game,” said Niko Bungert, Mainz’s sporting director. “It could have been easier for us had we scored a third goal. But we have three points. Right now, I honestly don’t care how the win came about. We’re just happy.
“We’ve taken another step forward, which will help us mentally. In our fourth Bundesliga match under Urs Fischer, we’ve taken the lead for the third time. Now we’ve managed to see it through, even if it took a real fight. That gives us momentum and confidence.”
Mainz will next face 11th-placed Köln, who are only five points ahead of them before hosting league leaders Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
