If Aro Muric thought gifting Everton a win would be the low point of his season, he was wrong. Oh, how he was wrong.
A week ago, the Kosovan goalkeeper lost Burnley a vital match at Goodison Park when an attempted clearance looped back past him off Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
But that was nothing compared with what happened to him against Brighton. No-one who saw the goal here will ever forget it. No exaggeration: it will still be getting shown in 50 years’ time.
There was no danger as Sander Berge rolled a ball back to Muric with 11 minutes left. But the keeper allowed it to trickle under his boot and into the net.
Just five minutes earlier, Burnley had been given hope in their Premier League survival bid – thanks to another error.
Arijanet Muric’s mistake saw Brighton earn a draw and Burnley miss out on a vital win
The Kosovan misjudged a pass and let the ball go under his foot and into the back of the net
Josh Brownhill had put the home side ahead with could have been a vital winner for the Clarets
Josh Brownhill charged down Bart Verbruggen’s kick to score after the goalkeeper had been placed in difficulty by Carlos Baleba’s underhit back pass.
Muric’s error, though, burst Burnley’s balloon. Really, they had to win this one. And they didn’t.
Burnley may have passed the point of no return even before Brighton’s visit – given they still have to face Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham during the run-in.
They could claim they were unlucky not to get a seventh-minute penalty, when French teenager Wilson Odobert tumbled over inside the penalty area, with contact made by defender Pervis Estupinan, but referee Simon Hooper wasn’t convinced enough, and a VAR check supported him.
But even without a break there, Vincent Kompany’s side had two golden chances to be in front at half-time, and failed to take either.
Even Jacob Bruun Larsen might not know how he managed to steer Odobert’s floated cross wide on the half-volley from three yards out as he arrived unmarked at the far post.
And Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana somehow failed to connect properly with a superb low ball in from Odobert right on half-time.
But Brighton had their chances too, with Muric saving twice from Simon Adingra, making a flying stop from Jakub Moder’s free-kick, and a brave block to keep out Danny Welbeck made up for that slip.
Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve denied Adingra with a brilliant tackle just after the break, as the Ivorian charged through on goal.
And although Fofana planted a diving header just wide from Lorenz Assignon’s right-wing cross for the hosts, it was Brighton who then had a strong spell of pressure.
Gross had one shot deflected just wide with Muric stranded, and then saw another tipped over by the keeper after Sander Berge gave the ball away just outside the area – with Joao Pedro glancing just wide from the resulting corner.
Just when it looked as if a goal would never arrive, Brownhill found one. But just when it looked as if that might be enough, Muric lived every goalkeeper’s worst nightmare.
The mistake means Burnley are six points from safety at the bottom of the Premier League
