Match report: Man City 2-0 Wolves

Jamie Jackson

League One

We mentioned earlier that Cardiff’s Yousef Salech suffered a nasty head injury against Stockport. In fact it was a neck injury – this is what the Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy said about the incident, as reported by the BBC.

It’s been coming. We’ve seen for months that he hasn’t been protected by the referees.

Yousef’s in hospital having a scan on his neck as a precaution and we’re just awaiting the results of that.

It definitely wasn’t nice viewing, but we’re very hopeful [it’s not serious]. It’s very difficult when you have such a serious injury to someone who’s so close to all the players.

It’s difficult to compose yourself and to focus on the game. So really considering those circumstances the players faced, I was over the moon [with how Cardiff played] and my own focus to be honest was a little bit distracted.

Match report: Fulham 2-1 Brighton

Harry Wilson’s taste for the spectacular continues to decorate Fulham’s season. Deep in added time, the Welshman’s free-kick beat Bart Verbruggen, whose failure to keep the ball out completed a regrettable afternoon for both goalkeepers.

As in August, when the two teams fought out a draw on opening day, Brighton rued missed chances and Fulham took theirs when they came. Fabian Hürzeler’s team continue to make the mistakes that keeps them landlocked in mid-table.

Bundesliga round-up

Strugglers Augsburg scored twice in six minutes late in the second half to come from a goal down and stun hosts Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Bavarian derby on Saturday, the league leaders’ first Bundesliga loss of the season.

The hosts, fresh from securing a Champions League knockout spot with Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise, took a 23rd-minute lead thanks to Hiroki Ito’s header but lacked any spark upfront as Augsburg struck in the 75th and 81st minutes through Arthur Chaves and Han-Noah Massengo to earn their first win in Munich for 11 years.

Match report: Burnley 2-2 Tottenham

Will Unwin

Thomas Frank was brought to Tottenham as the pragmatic choice so will know that when his own supporters are demanding his sacking, he is in trouble. An underserved draw at Burnley, thanks to a last minute Cristian Romero goal, leaves Spurs with two victories in 14 Premier League matches and chants from the away end of “We want Frank out”.

If the loss to West Ham resulted in crisis talks last Sunday, Frank must have feared what the next stage after that is, especially with the fans turning. Micky van de Ven gave them hope of a much-needed win but Spurs did not capitalise on the opener, allowing Burnley back into the match, with Axel Tuanzebe and Lyle Foster making the pressure almost unbearable for Frank until Romero offered respite.

Bournemouth v Liverpool

Still want more? Bet you do. Thankfully Billy Munday is on duty for the match at the Vitality Stadium.

“Aberdeen have won 6-2 at home to Livingston,” writes Simon McMahon, “and Falkirk and Motherwell have both scored four at home to Hibs and Kilmarnock respectively. And in the bowls, we’ve gone into a tie break! The Afcon final had nothing on this.”

Full time: Hull 2-1 Swansea; Sheffield United 3-1 Ipswich

Hull move level on points with third-placed Ipswich after an eventful afternoon in the Championship.

Full time: Burnley 2-2 Tottenham

A frustrating result for both sides in a ding-dong game. It could have been worse for Spurs, who needed an immense late header from Cristian Romero to avoid defeat.

Full time: Manchester City 2-0 Wolves

A much-needed win for City. Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo scored classy goals to see off the bottom club Wolves and move City to within four points of the leaders Arsenal.

90+5 min: Burnley 2-2 Tottenham Cristian Romero’s equaliser was a brilliant goal – a flying, heartfelt header from Wilson Odobert’s flat cross.

Full time! Fulham 2-1 Brighton

Fulham come from behind to continue their superb home form. Harry Wilson got the winner in injury time with an eyecatching free-kick, albeit one that Bart Verbruggen should have saved. As if Wilson will care.

GOAL! Burnley 2-2 Tottenham (Romero 90)

Cristian Romero scored a dramatic equaliser for Spurs! Of course it was Romero: he and his fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven, who gave Spurs the lead earlier today, have scored 13 goals between them this season.

90 min: Burnley 2-1 Tottenham For the second Saturday in succession, the Spurs supporters (sic) are singing, ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ at Thomas Frank.

Red card! Sheff Utd 3-1 Ipswich

Sheffield United captain Patrick Bamford, who scored their third goal, has now been sent off after receiving a second yellow card. I think it was for diving but there’s a lot going on. Also: 3pm blackout.

On this day in 1981… Everton put Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

GOAL! Burnley 2-1 Tottenham (Foster 76)

A big goal for Burnley in their fight against relegation – and a nightmare for Thomas Frank. The substitute Lyle Foster has scored at the second attempt after superb play from Jaidon Anthony, who beat Van de Ven on the edge of the area before putting Foster through on goal.

“Great call on the Whiteside GBH video (3.17pm),” writes Peadar de Burca. A player who according to those in Belfast who saw him as a young teenager, was an absurdly skilled goal-machine. Apparently, a less than competent physio ruined his pelvis and big Norm had to change his playing style to a mixture of Souness circa 1984 and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. You get the feeling from watching your clip that he got just as much craic from leaving the leg in as scoring belters against the Scousers.”

And even more pleasure from leaving the leg in against the Scousers.

Disallowed goal! Fulham 1-1 Brighton An excellent finish from Danny Welbeck gives Bright- ah, he was fractionally offside and it’s been ruled out by VAR. As you were.
