Calhanoglu explains Bayern Munich snub, reveals Inter dreams

Hakan Calhanoglu dreams of winning the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or at Inter and confirms that affection from Nerazzurri fans convinced him to snub a move to Bayern Munich last summer.

The Turkey international spoke to Sport Mediaset on Sunday after contributing to his national team’s 3-0 away win in Hungary, with a penalty-kick goal in the first half.

Calhanoglu’s Inter are the only Serie A team still involved in three competitions. They are the current Serie A leaders and have qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals and the Coppa Italia semis.

“We players always try to represent Inter in the best possible way. We know we have a huge responsibility, but we are on the right path and want to continue this way,” the Turkey star said.

“I have already won everything in Italy, so of course, my goal is to win the Champions League. Two years ago, we lost in the final, and being back there, in the final, is my dream. Winning the Scudetto again is also important.

“We are fighting for all competitions. We players improve with every match, and of course, it’s a goal to be there,” he continued.

“The fans have always supported me; they have lifted me up not just as a player but also as a person. I have matured, and I thank them. What they are doing for us is indescribable. Our fans are incredible. At San Siro, they give us immense strength.

Is this the reason why he snubbed a move to Bayern Munich last summer? “Yes,” Calha replied smiling.

Calhanoglu said last week that he hoped his compatriot Arda Guler would get more playing time at a club level and suggested a move to Inter.

“I already answered before; I can’t add anything else. Let’s see what happens. My thoughts were for him, for him to play more,” said the Inter midfielder.

Calhanoglu’s Inter backup, Kristjan Asllani, recently praised the Turkish star and described him as one of his role models.

“I thank him for his words, those with more experience help others,” said Calhanoglu.

“Kri has enormous talent and the quality to play for Inter. It’s certainly not easy for him, but we are helping him. It’s not easy for him, but he has done his job when given the chance. He has to keep going like this.”
