Cameron Archer leaves Aston Villa

Aston Villa and Southampton have come to an agreement for the transfer of striker Cameron Archer. The forward will move to the South Coast in a deal worth an initial £15 million with a further £3.5 million in add-ons, as the player signs a four-year contract at St Mary’s.

The 22-year-old striker has played regularly for Villa in pre-season in the absence of Ollie Watkins, and his form has impressed Southampton sufficiently to make a bid for the former Sheffield United player. Archer had been on the books at Villa since he was a youth player, and had appeared for England’s under-21 side 11 times, scoring six goals. Last season Archer didn’t hit the ground running though, scoring just four goals in 29 Premier League appearances.

Ultimately though, Unai Emery has decided to cash in on the striker, in what has been a very busy summer for Aston Villa. With the club set to take part in the Champions League, Emery has added quality and quantity to his squad and now has come the time to sell some players.
