Ferguson retired in 2013 after 26 years in charge at Old Trafford, but upon his resignation as manager he was given an ambassador role at the club worth over €2.5 million per year.

However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team have decided to end Ferguson’s contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign amid significant cuts across all areas of the club.

Ferguson will remain a non-executive director at Man Utd, as per The Athletic, but his role at the club has been drastically reduced as INEOS continue to stamp their authority at Old Trafford.

Following the decision to end Ferguson’s contract, Cantona has taken aim at the club’s hierarchy on social media.

“Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do anything he wants at the club until the day he dies,” the Red Devils legend posted on Instagram.

“Such a lack of respect. It’s totally scandalous. Sir Alex Ferguson will be my boss forever! And I throw them all in a big bag of s***!”

Cantona scored 81 goals and won nine trophies during a five-year spell at Man Utd, while Ferguson guided the club to 38 honours between 1986 and 2013.

Rio Ferdinand issues Man Utd warning

News of Man Utd’s decision to end Ferguson’s ambassadorial contract also prompted Rio Ferdinand to issue a warning to those currently employed by the club.

He posted on X (formerly known as Twitter): “If Sir Alex can be taken out, then NO ONE IS SAFE at Man Utd – anyone can get it now. Ineos sending a message to ANYONE at the club?!?”

Erik ten Hag is among those under immense pressure at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman overseeing the club’s worst start in Premier League history.

Man Utd are currently 14th in the English top flight table, having picked up just eight points from their opening seven league matches, while they are winless in each of their last five games across all competitions.

Thomas Tuchel was heavily linked with replacing Ten Hag at the helm, but he has now agreed a deal to become the next permanent England manager.
