CARABAO CUP QUARTER-FINAL DRAW: Man United handed tough away trip with Arsenal and Liverpool landing favourable ties in all-Premier League last eight

Manchester United will travel to Tottenham in the standout tie of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in the week commencing December 17.

The Red Devils booked their place in the last eight with a 5-2 shredding of Leicester City, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both scoring twice while Alejandro Garnacho also chipped in.  

Tottenham will be buoyed after beating Premier League champions Manchester City 2-1 on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will host Crystal Palace in an all-London tie while Liverpool face another trip to the south coast as they face Southampton.

Newcastle will welcome Brentford to the north east after dispatching Chelsea 2-0 at St James’ Park.  

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first match in interim charge at Old Trafford proved a rip-roaring encounter, with Casemiro‘s top-corner stunner from 25 yards the pick of the goals. 

United had only won once in eight games, leading to Erik ten Hag’s sacking on Monday, but proceeded safely and in the quarter-finals will play the side who thumped them 3-0 in September.

Spurs dispatched a youthful Manchester City side on Wednesday night after Werner found just his third goal for the club and Sarr scored his own peach from outside the area. 

Ange Postecoglou has Yves Bissouma to thank after the midfielder blocked Nico O’Reilly’s last effort on the line, getting pumped-up congratulations from his team-mates. The one worrying moment was when Micky van de Ven went off in tears with a hamstring injury, 

Liverpool survived a late onslaught from Brighton to emerge 3-2 victors at the Amex to make the quarters.

The reigning competition champions went 2-0 up as Cody Gakpo ran riot, but Simon Adingra gave the hosts hope.

Fortunately for Arne Slot Luis Diaz popped up with a neat finish inside the area after 85 minutes because the Seagulls pushed hard and got their second on 90 minutes as Tariq Lamptey’s effort deflected in, but it wasn’t to be for Fabian Hurzeler’s side. 

Arsenal proceeded seamlessly into the last eight with a 3-0 win away at Preston. 

Seventeen-year-old Ethan Nwaneri stole the show with a stunning top corner curler, his goal sandwiched by a Gabriel Jesus half-volley and bullet header from Kai Havertz.

Crystal Palace upset Aston Villa on the road as Eberechi Eze and Daichi Kamada did enough to supersede Jhon Duran’s goal, though Eze and Adam Wharton both suffered injuries. 

Newcastle were good value for their win over a wayward Chelsea, who never looked at the races and were sank by Alexander Isak and Axel Disas’s own goal.

Brentford had advanced on Tuesday night after beating Sheffield Wdnesday on penalties while Southampton had beaten Stoke 3-2.
