Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba has denied speculation that his form has dipped as a result of summer interest from Manchester United.

The Cameroon international, 21, was close to completing a blockbuster Old Trafford switch before Deadline Day on 1 September, however the proposed transfer failed to materialise due to Brighton’s asking price of over €115 million.

Widespread reports have confirmed that Baleba had agreed personal terms with Man Utd over a move this summer and he remains a top target for the Red Devils ahead of the 2026 January transfer window.

Ruben Amorim’s side are also eyeing possible moves for Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), although Baleba is still on their radar and a deal could be completed next year.

It’s understood that Brighton have lowered their asking price to €85m and Man Utd are expected to pursue a transfer in January or next summer.

Carlos Baleba responds to Man Utd speculation

Baleba has only played the entire 90 minutes in one Premier League match so far this season, and it has been hinted that his drop in form is due to Man Utd’s interest.

However, Baleba himself has now poured cold water on such claims during an interview with Sky Sports.

“I don’t think it affected me negatively, but I had a lot of pressure on me,” the Brighton midfielder admitted (via GOAL). “When I started this season, I wanted to show the same performances as last season.

“Every day I try to work hard and get back to my level. Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think it’s good. It’s good for me, because now I have to get through this slightly stressful period, get back on the horse and continue working hard.”
