Carragher has ‘no hope’ and predicts who’ll knock Liverpool out of Champs League

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool will overturn their deficit against Galatasaray at Anfield but predicts Paris Saint-Germain will end their Champions League hopes in the next round

Jamie Carragher has lost all hope for Liverpool and predicted that Paris Saint-Germain will end their Champions League aspirations once and for all. The Reds icon gave a brutal verdict of his old team after watching them slip to a 1-0 defeat in their first leg against Galatasaray.

And while he’s backing them to overcome the Turkish side when they visit Anfield for the second leg, he believes Liverpool have no chance of winning the tournament. Mario Lemina returned to haunt Liverpool – having scored a winning goal at Anfield for Fulham in 2021 – on Tuesday night, netting the only goal to secure a Champions League double over the Reds for the Istanbul club this season.

The six-time champions face a challenging route to the final, and if they defeat Galatasaray, they’ll confront the winner of Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. However, they’ll need to dig deep and rediscover their form under Arne Slot as pressure continues to pile on the Dutchman.

Carragher voiced his concerns about Liverpool, but anticipates them to overcome the deficit against Galatasaray.

He said: “This team is just a million miles off where it was supposed to be this season, which was that we would be talking about them the way we speak about Bayern Munich right now.

“That was the whole point of Liverpool spending over £400m in the summer, to go to the next step from winning the Premier League to winning the UCL.

“We are talking about a team who now have to change a deficit against Galatasaray, which I think they will. But I don’t have any hope for Liverpool going any further than that if it is PSG in the next round, as I think it may be.

“That for me is a big worry. It is not just a defeat; I think the performances from Liverpool this season are a big worry for the manager.

“I think I said on this show during the group stages, he’s got to change something – he has tried everything really in lots of different ways, but nothing seems to be able to work.

“At no stage of this season have I ever thought Liverpool were in control of a football match.”

Should Liverpool crash out of the competition, it will place emphasis on their FA Cup quarter-final away at Manchester City, with the short journey across the North West seeing their season depend on a clash with Premier League title contenders.

The former Liverpool defender anticipates the defending champions will meet Bayern Munich, who surged to a 6-1 first-leg advantage after an away victory at Atalanta.

On the opposite side of the draw, Carragher says Arsenal and Barcelona will advance, with Mikel Arteta’s side securing the triumph over Barcelona in revenge for the 2006 final before claiming their first European crown.
