Manchester United have added a surprise target to their transfer shortlist after Michael Carrick confirmed that the club would look to splash the cash on a left winger this summer.

United are hoping to be playing Champions League football next season after an impressive turnaround under Carrick, which has seen the Red Devils boast six wins in their last eight matches to rise to third in the Premier League table.

With the sales of Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund set to net United around €80 million in transfer revenue, the midfield and left wing are expected to be the club’s top priorities in the summer window.

“It’s something to look at,” Carrick said this week when asked about improving on the left wing. “I think Matheus [Cunha] can play in that position. Amad can do it too. We have very good options all over the front line.”

And, according to the Daily Mail, Bournemouth star Marcus Tavernier has emerged as a target for United after an impressive campaign where he has netted five goals and four assists in the league.

It is claimed that Bournemouth may be open to cashing in on Tavernier for around £40 million (€46m) in order to reinvest the funds across their squad, although the 26-year-old is one of many targets for United in that area.

Tavernier gives Man Utd affordable and proven option from left-wing targets

Much of United’s summer will depend on where they finish in the final nine matches of the season, with Champions League revenue likely to dictate the level of funds available to spend.

United’s ideal target on the wing is believed to be Yan Diomande but there is strong interest from the likes of Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain in the RB Leipzig wonderkid and he could cost up to €100m.

Consequently, Tavernier represents a cheaper option for United and a Premier League-proven entity – something which the club have seen success with following the signings of Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo last year.

Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White is also thought to be a target for United while FootballTransfers has been told that Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is also high on the club’s shortlist for the summer.
