Adam Idah has completed his loan move to Celtic – but the transfer window looked set to fall significantly short of the expectations of manager Brendan Rodgers and the club’s supporters.

The 22-year-old Irishman’s temporary switch from Norwich City until the end of the season was confirmed with an hour remaining.

A substitute in the majority of the Canaries’ matches this season, Idah expressed a desire to move to Glasgow ahead of the alternative offers that were put in front of him.

Speaking to Celtic TV, Idah said: ‘It’s such a huge club with such a big history behind it and I can’t even put into words what it’s like to be at Celtic.

‘My family and my friends are all delighted that I’m here and I just can’t wait to get started. All of us back home support Celtic so it’s huge for me and I’m so excited to be here.

‘I want to play games, I want to help this team and the aim for me is to win those two trophies and I want to score a lot of goals for this club.’

The forward, who has 22 full caps for Ireland, moved to Norwich in 2017 from College Corinthians.

Finally fit after a succession of injuries, he’s played 26 times in total in the league this season, scoring six goals.

With Oh Hyeon-gyu still involved with South Korea at the Asian Cup, Idah is likely to be the preferred back-up for Kyogo Furuhashi at Aberdeen on Saturday.

However, with Nick Kuhn, a £3million buy from Rapid Vienna, the only other addition to Rodgers’ squad this month, Celtic’s transfer dealings will inevitably come under the microscope again.

Hours after the summer transfer window closed, the manager stressed the need for a number of ‘quality’ players to arrive in January.

But the Northern Irishman, who recently revealed that he was denied four players he identified when he first returned to the club, has been left frustrated in his efforts to bolster his squad to his liking.

Despite repeatedly being linked with goalkeepers and left-backs including Wolves’ Hugo Bueno and PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa, 31, nothing materialised meaning the manager will be forced to make do with a striker in Idah and a winger in Kuhn.

Celtic have succeeded in reducing their bloated squad this month, though.

Marco Tilio has returned to Melbourne City on loan. Kwon Hyeok-kyu, another one of the nine summer signings, has been farmed out to St Mirren until the end of the season.

David Turnbull was also poised to complete a £2m move to Cardiff with Yosuke Ideguchi having moved to Vissel Kobe earlier in January. Nat Phillips also moved to Cardiff after returning to Liverpool from his loan Celtic.

Mikey Johnston has signed for West Bromwich Albion on loan until the end of the season.

But Gustaf Lagerbielke was left in Glasgow as his proposed loan move from Lecce to Celtic bit the dust.

The Swedish centre-back was set to make the switch to the Serie A side, who would then have had the option to buy him in the summer.

But Celtic pulled the plug on the deal due to persistent fitness issues around first-choice centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers.
