Celtic are looking to beat rivals Rangers to one of their top transfer targets after opening talks over a double signing to add to Martin O’Neill’s squad late in the January window.
The Scottish giants have already made two additions this month with the loan signings of Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara but O’Neill is still keen to add more quality to his ranks after a difficult season so far.
Celtic sit third in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind leaders Hearts, and the Hoops are desperate to ensure they do not miss out on the league title for just the second time in 15 years.
The situation has led to Celtic holding discussions with Italian outfit Frosinone over a deal for French winger Fares Ghedjemis, according to The Celtic Way.
Ghedjemis, who has scored eight times in Serie B this season, is out of contract in the summer and reports in Italy have claimed that Frosinone have already begun negotiating for his replacement in anticipation of the 23-year-old’s exit this month.
Speaking ahead of Celtic’s Europa League tie against Dutch outfit Utrecht on Thursday, O’Neill addressed the need for new faces before the transfer deadline on Monday but insisted any new arrivals had to be of a certain quality too.
“We can get people in, and numbers in,” O’Neill said. “Whether that improves the squad or not is a different thing. We’re trying to get as much quality as we can. We do need both.”
Celtic pushing to sign Rangers transfer target
Celtic are also said to be working on an agreement to sign Hungarian attacker Damir Redzic from DAC Dunajska of Slovenia, who has also been heavily linked with bitter rivals Rangers.
Redzic has netted nine goals this season, which earned him his first cap for Hungary in November, and the 22-year-old can play wide or centrally in attack.
With his contract due to expire in 2027, Redzic addressed speculation over his future earlier this week, admitting that he was aware of interest in him.
“According to my manager, several clubs are interested in me,” Redzic said. “But the first step is always that they have to agree with DAC.
“At the moment, I am focusing exclusively on my work, performing my duties, and I want to be in the best possible shape until the start of the league in February, so that I can help the team to the maximum.”
