Celtic appear to have lost out on a major target late in the January transfer window.

The Bhoys had been battling with Germany’s TSG Hoffenheim for the signature of 17-year-old Michael Noonan, according to John Fallon of the Irish Examiner.

The German club saw two bids rejected, but their offer of €1.8m up front has been accepted.

Now, the decision is down to the player, according to the report. He could wait until the summer if he wants a move to the UK, as he turns 18 at the end of July.

Celtic, meanwhile, have been searching for a solution at striker. The club brought in Tomas Cvancara on loan this month while Kelechi Iheanacho deals with a hamstring injury and Jota is out for the season.

Noonan is a constant presence for reigning Irish Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers, whether in the first XI or a substitute role, so it is plain to see why the youngster is in demand.

Noonan’s impact at senior level

Despite his youth, Noonan has netted six times in 30 Irish Premier Division matches this season.

With 1,451 minutes played, he has scored a goal every 241 minutes for the first-team in 2025/26.

At Celtic, first-choice centre-forward Iheanacho has played just four matches and scored two goals this season.

Noonan also put in strong performances for his country at the U17 World Cup, scoring three goals in five matches.

That includes the winner against Uzbekistan in the group stage, and the equalizer against Canada in the round of 32, which Ireland went on to win via a penalty shootout.

Noonan also scored a brace against Cork City in June 2025, and he had a goal contribution in four consecutive matches the month prior.

With Celtic needing depth up front, it would not be a surprise if they make another push for the Ireland youth international before he puts pen to paper.
