Championship club sack manager after fans turn on him following home defeat

Leicester City have sacked manager Marti Cifuentes, following the defeat by Oxford United on Saturday.

Sections of supporters at King Power Stadium chanted for Cifuentes, 43, to be ‘sacked in the morning’ during the match.

Owner and chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha has travelled over from Thailand and was in the directors’ box.

Talks among the club hierarchy took place about the manager’s future on Sunday morning and Leicester came to the decision later in the afternoon.

‘This has been a difficult decision and not one I have taken lightly,’ said Srivaddhanaprabha.

‘I would like to thank Martí for the total commitment he has shown during his time at Leicester City. He gave everything to the role and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our targets.

‘However, I believe this is the right step at this time to improve performances and results, and to act in the best interests of Leicester City Football Club. Martí leaves with our thanks and our best wishes for the future.’

Leicester are awaiting the outcome of an independent commission hearing on alleged PSR breaches.

Should they to receive a nine-point deduction as punishment, they would be outside the Championship relegation places only on goal difference.

Cifuentes had been appointed Leicester manager in July 2025. The Spaniard won 10 out of the 29 Championship games, of which he took charge.

They are six points off the play-off places and nine above the relegation zone.
