Championship club sack Premier League cult hero after dismal run of TEN away losses in a row

West Brom have sacked head coach Ryan Mason after a dreadful run of 10 away league losses in a row.

Mason, 34, was only appointed by the Baggies in June after cutting his coaching teeth at former club Tottenham, but he has struggled in the West Midlands.

After Monday’s last-gasp 2-1 defeat at Leicester City, West Brom are 18th in the Championship and just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Fans in the away end at the King Power Stadium had chanted for Mason’s dismissal during and after the game, and the former Spurs and Hull midfielder departs with a record 13 defeats, nine wins and four draws in 26 Championship matches.

In a statement announcing his departure on Tuesday morning, West Brom said: ‘West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with men’s first team Head Coach Ryan Mason.

‘Assistant Head Coach Nigel Gibbs and First Team Coach/Head of Performance Sam Pooley have also departed The Hawthorns.

‘The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan, Nigel and Sam for their efforts and wishes all three the very best for the future.

‘The process of recruiting a new men’s first team head coach and staff is under way.’

First team coach and former Baggies star James Morrison has been placed in interim charge until a new appointment is named.

Speaking in the aftermath of the Leicester defeat, a game where the Baggies had the better chances, a frustrated Mason tried to remain upbeat.

‘It seems to be the way of it at the moment,’ he said. ‘We are on a terrible run in terms of away games, but you look at the last seven or eight games that we have played, we have had more shots at goal than the opposition, more shots on target, more chances created, and conceded so little at our end as well.

‘But for some reason, pretty much every shot that goes on our target ends up as a goal, which is incredible. We are just not able to capitalise on our moments.

‘Standing on the side of the pitch, I got so much pride in my team, especially in the moment we are in, because they keep running and they never stop running for me. But also they play the game with so much quality.

‘I am proud of the team and proud of the performance, and we deserve so much more. In reality, a lack of discipline at the end cost us what would have been a harsh point in my opinion and we end up coming away with nothing.’

Mason, who was the fourth youngest manager in the EFL after being forced to retire through injury aged 26, was hampered by the Baggies’ financial limitations and a weaker squad than in previous years.

This saw key men Darnell Furlong, Tom Fellows and Torbjorn Heggem among the stars sold in the summer, but he failed to convince fans he was the right man for the job.

After a positive start where his side picked up 17 points in their first 10 games of the campaign, they have taken only 14 in the subsequent 16 matches and lost six of their past eight.

West Brom will now be looking for their fourth permanent manager in just over a year after Carlos Corberan joined Valencia in December 2024, before Tony Mowbray was sacked after only three months in charge in April.
