Change between the sticks? Backhaus to battle Zetterer for Bremen goalkeeper berth

Could we see a new face between the posts in the Weserstadion next season?

Are we set for another goalkeeper change between the sticks for Werder Bremen? A recent press conference revealed a lot.

As noted by Deichstube, Michael Zetterer was clear first-choice; but Mio Backhaus’ recent contract extension could suggest otherwise.

New head coach Horst Steffen emphasized in training that he wanted to give all players – including the goalkeepers – a fair chance.

“Zetti had the role of regular starter here, and I say: he earned it and worked hard for it. But that doesn’t guarantee an automatic continuation of this constellation.

“Mio is a candidate who brings great talent. Give me time to evaluate him,” said the 56-year-old gaffer.

A final decision will not be made prematurely, but will be developed based on the impressions from training and friendlies.

The first tests of the new season will take place next Saturday against FC Verden 04 and on July 19 against Kickers Emden.

One thing is clear – the talented 21-year-old Backhaus could lay claim to the position if he delivers a string of impressive performances.
