Sunderland‘s Stadium of Light became the Stadium of Fright on Tuesday night when part of the ceiling collapsed and almost hit reporters during a press conference.

Manager Regis Le Bris was being interviewed after seeing his side draw 1-1 with Bristol City thanks to Patrick Roberts’ 93rd-minute equaliser.

And the Black Cats were counting their lucky stars when a ceiling panel fell but fortunately avoided hitting anybody.

At least 10 people were in the room at the time.

The Sunderland Echo has reported that a leak upstairs was responsible for the moment of madness.

A clip of the incident has gone viral on X, amassing almost one million views, and commenters were quick to poke fun at the Championship side for their misfortune.

‘Just like their season and their home attendances collapsing,’ wrote one, which isn’t quite true considering Sunderland sit fourth and crowd sizes are up almost 4,000 on average compared to last season.

‘Is that the roof falling in on their promotion push?’ said another.

‘If only they had “parachute money” to sort press room out,’ one commented.

Another quipped: ‘If you didn’t tell me I’d have assumed Old Trafford.’

It has been a remarkable debut season in Wearside for Le Bris, who arrived from Lorient and has Sunderland pushing for a return to the Premier League.

The Wearsiders are four points off Leeds in the automatic promotion places and have a six-point buffer over playoff-chasers Middlesbrough in seventh.

They have been negotiating a slightly awkward period which has seen them draw six of their last eight games, winning one and drawing the other, and therefore lost ground on Sheffield United, Leeds, and Burnley.

Bristol City almost pinched three points in the north eat after Luke McNally’s 62nd-minute opener but Roberts saved them a point.

‘I believe we deserved it. We started the match on the front foot with an excellent tempo,’ said Le Bris.

‘We executed our game plan with swift ball movement and tactical triangles, creating several opportunities.

‘However, we lacked the necessary numbers in the box to capitalise on our crosses.’
