Chelsea are advancing on a deal for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, according to reports in Argentina.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a Wanda Metropolitano exit in recent weeks and Chelsea are keen to challenge for his signature as they continue their pursuit of attacking reinforcements.

The Blues added Liam Delap and Joao Pedro to their forward line last summer, while Emmanuel Emegha and Dastan Satpaev will both arrive at the club ahead of the 2026-27 season after Liam Rosenior’s side pre-agreed deals for the duo. However, they remain interested in signing another new striker and they have once again been linked with a move for FC Porto star Samu Aghehowa in recent days.

Despite this, Alvarez appears to be their preferred target and reports in Spain suggest that Chelsea are willing to “break the bank” in order to sign the former Manchester City forward.

ESPN Argentina now report that Chelsea are quietly advancing on a deal for Alvarez, with conversations ongoing with his representatives over a potential summer transfer.

Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are also understood to be interested in Alvarez, and the former are expected to pursue a deal later this year amid the struggles that Viktor Gyokeres has faced since he arrived in north London from Sporting CP last summer.

Julian Alvarez to join Chelsea?

The aforementioned Pedro has been in immense form for Chelsea since the appointment of Rosenior in early January and he has firmly established himself as the club’s first choice striker ahead of fellow summer signing Delap.

As a result, Alvarez would likely be in competition with the Brazil international and Emegha, who will arrive from Strasbourg in July.

If Chelsea do sign Alvarez, it would cast major doubts on Delap’s long-term future at the club, with the England striker potentially dropping down to fourth choice in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
