Chelsea handed boost in search for Mauricio Pochettino replacement

Chelsea have reportedly been handed a boost in their search for Mauricio Pochettino’s successor.

Pochettino remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2025 but he is expected to be sacked at the end of the season.

The Blues have barely improved under the Argentine, as they sit in 11th place in the Premier League table.

Pochettino did manage to reach the Carabao Cup final but a dismal extra-time display saw them lose 1-0 to an injury-riddled Liverpool side.

There have been a number of managers linked with replacing the former Tottenham head coach, including Jose Mourinho and Thomas Tuchel.

Meanwhile, reports of interest in Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi have been consistent in recent months.

And, according to The Times, the Seagulls ‘fear’ that the ‘disgruntled’ Italian will decide to leave this summer.

Brighton are having another impressive campaign, in 8th place at this moment, but De Zerbi will feel that more could have been achieved with backing in the transfer market.

Having sold Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, they had the funds to drastically improve the squad.

However, it seems as though Brighton have taken a step backwards after continuing to spend frugally.

Is De Zerbi ready for Chelsea?

While De Zerbi has won plaudits for his attacking style of play, which would go down well with Chelsea supporters, his Brighton side have a problem of conceding too many goals.

The Seagulls have let in 59 goals in 39 games in all competitions so far this season and their results include a 3-2 loss against AEK Athens, a 6-1 loss against Aston Villa, a 3-2 loss against Chelsea, a 4-0 loss against Luton Town, a 3-0 loss against Fulham and a 4-0 loss against Roma.

They have kept seven clean sheets this campaign, with just three coming in the Premier League – against Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United.

Out-of-possession shape is extremely important and it is that that has enabled Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to win so many titles – they are brilliant going forward, but their defensive structure is also top notch.

De Zerbi must learn how to coach a competent defence, one which isn’t constantly exposed, before he takes on the challenge of leading a European giant like Chelsea.
