Chelsea hire former Leeds and Brighton star as goalkeeping coach to help out-of-form Robert Sanchez until the end of the season

Chelsea have hired the former Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion stopper Casper Ankergren in a temporary role which will see him reunited with first-team goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts.

Daily Mail Sport can confirm the 46-year-old Dane is set to help train Robert Sanchez and Co on the grass until the end of the 2025-26 season as cover for a member of staff who is currently recovering from surgery.

Ankergren ended his playing career at Brighton in 2017 before staying on the technical staff to assist Roberts, who was in charge of the goalkeepers at the Seagulls at the time.

Ankergren will now again act as an assistant to Roberts in working with Sanchez and his back-ups in Filip Jorgensen, 23, and Teddy Sharman-Lowe, 22, under Liam Rosenior.

It was also at Brighton where Ankergren worked with Graham Potter after he replaced Chris Hughton as manager in 2019. His most recent coaching role was as a member of West Ham’s backroom staff supporting Potter. Ankergren joined the Hammers in July 2025 but Potter was sacked in the September of that year.

Ankergren also served as head of goalkeeping at Brodnby prior to that switch.

When Rosenior joined Chelsea in January, he brought several staff with him from Strasbourg, including Kalifa Cisse and Justin Walker as his assistants and Ben Warner as an analyst, while Calum McFarlane was promoted to the first-team staff after leading the Under 21s.

Roberts’ title is head of global goalkeeping, but he has taken a hands-on role in charge of Chelsea’s stoppers under Rosenior.
