Chelsea have been handed a fine worth a potential €91 million for breaching UEFA’s financial rules.
Enzo Maresca’s side have spent over €1.5 billion on new signings since the arrival of BlueCo as their new owners in 2022 and they have now been hit with a mega fine by European football’s governing body.
Chelsea have received an initial fine of €20m from UEFA for breaching its financial rules, with an additional €11m fine for breaching the “squad cost rule”. The Blues risk being hit with a further €60m fine for conditional breaches, meaning their total fine could reach a whopping €91m.
The west London side avoided breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by selling their women’s team to a sister company for a world-record fee of €232m. However, UEFA don’t allow such transactions to be included in clubs’ profit and loss margins, which has resulted in Chelsea’s financial breach.
UEFA’s “football earnings rule” permits clubs to lose a maximum of €200m over three years and Chelsea are among the clubs to have exceeded this figure.
In addition to their fine, Chelsea will be unable to register new players onto their A List for UEFA competitions for the next four years unless they have a positive transfer balance.
UEFA issue several huge fines for financial breaches
Meanwhile, UEFA have also fined Aston Villa, Barcelona and Olympique Lyon for similar financial breaches.
Aston Villa have agreed to a three-year settlement and a €20m fine, of which €5m is unconditional. Furthermore, like Chelsea, Unai Emery’s side also breached the squad cost role and have been fined an additional €6m.
Barcelona have received a €60m fine, of which €15m is unconditional, while Lyon have been hit with a fine worth €12.5m, plus an additional €37.5m if certain conditions are met.
Hajduk Split, Porto, Besiktas, Panathinaikos, Wisla Krakow and Roma have also been fined by UEFA.
