Chelsea and Liverpool have received a massive boost with the news that Aston Villa may be compelled to cash in on Morgan Rogers this summer.

The England international has become one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking players since moving to Villa Park in January 2024. Rogers was last season’s PFA Young Player of the Year and has continued to star for Unai Emery.

Transfer interest in the 24-year-old is rampant. Chelsea looked into a deal to sign him last summer, but Aston Villa made it emphatically clear that he was not for sale. They have since handed him a new contract, too.

Despite the coaching change at Stamford Bridge, the Blues remain keen on Rogers. Liam Rosenior is said to have already approved the club’s pursuit of the Three Lions star, with Rogers likely to cost north of €100 million.

However, Chelsea are far from his only admirers. Liverpool are in the mix to sign Rogers as well, and some reports have claimed that discussions over a potential move have already taken place.

Aston Villa to sell Rogers?

On the face of it, Aston Villa should be under no pressure to sell. Rogers has a long-term contract, and the club have overcome the worst of their financial difficulties, especially with the upcoming buffer period in mind as the Premier League transitions between regulatory frameworks.

However, Premier League regulations are not the only thing they have to worry about, of course. Villa also need to be mindful of UEFA rules, which they already breached in the past. This is where issues could arise.

Champions League qualification, which looks a good bet at this stage, would offer a significant financial windfall and completely eradicate the need to sell key players. However, if Villa actually want to sign high-profile reinforcements, they may still have to cash in on someone, like Rogers.

At least that is according to Ben Jacobs, who wrote for GIVEMESPORT: “Firstly, the contract extension was to reward Rogers and to protect his valuation, and secondly, Villa still may need a significant outgoing, even though they’re on course for Champions League football this season. It may be that, financially speaking, and to do a squad overhaul, a big outgoing is still necessary as far as Villa are concerned.”
