Inter are exploring a move for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah in what will be a worrying development for Enzo Maresca.
The Blues boss has made no secret of his desire to bolster his defence following Levi Colwill’s unfortunate ACL injury, which will keep the young centre-back sidelined for the majority of the season.
Maresca has reiterated his wish today but admitted that the club hierarchy appears to have different plans, hinting at a small rift between the head coach and the recruitment department.
“I think we need a central defender, but we are looking for an internal solution. But the club knows exactly what I think,” Maresca said earlier on Friday. It comes after he insisted that strengthening the backline was a ‘priority’ last week.
In light of this, it is clear that the last thing the Italian needs is to lose another defender, but that is exactly what could still happen between now and the deadline.
Inter explore Chalobah move
According to TEAMtalk, Inter have begun exploring a move for Trevoh Chalobah, with the report stating that the Nerazzurri have ‘asked for new information’ on the 26-year-old.
It is claimed that Inter are looking to initially bring him in on loan, but it seems doubtful that Chelsea would sanction this, given the limited number of international loan spots available.
Chalobah’s standing in the Chelsea team is currently uncertain. There are suggestions that he is again a part of the Blues’ ‘Bomb Squad’ as he was last summer, but due to Colwill’s injury, it is unclear if his exit will be authorised.
The academy graduate is also said to be fielding interest from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs. Inter believe that they could easily cover his annual €3 million salary and are attracted by his versatility.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that another defender, Renato Veiga, is the subject of interest from Villarreal. The Portugal international is keen on the move, but the LaLiga side’s opening bid has been deemed unsatisfactory.
