Chelsea could make a late swoop for Evan Ferguson, the Brighton striker who they have tracked ever since he broke through and is available either on loan or permanently in the closing days of the January transfer window.

Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Everton, Tottenham and West Ham have all been linked with the 20-year-old, and Enzo Maresca’s side are the latest to join a race described by Seagulls sources as wide open.

Chelsea’s co-sporting director Paul Winstanley knows Ferguson and his representatives well as he was previously at Brighton, and the Blues are currently searching for a striker to help Nicolas Jackson in the second half of the season.

Jackson has not scored in any of Chelsea’s last seven games, a run which coincides with Chelsea falling outside of the Premier League’s top four.

They have other names on their attacking shortlist, such as Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, who is also wanted by Tottenham.

Though Ferguson has struggled for form of late, with only one goal scored all season, he has shown his Premier League potential in glimpses.

At 20, he would suit the Chelsea model of signing youngsters with scope to improve.

It is not yet clear who is leading the race for Ferguson, who has been recovering from an ankle injury.

It is thought he could be available for around £40million.
