Chelsea looked at two midfield options for a winter transfer, but were burned by both targets.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s agent tested the market for the player this month as he has 18 months left on his Milan contract, but the player revealed that he is happy and settled in England, according to TeamTalk.
Loftus-Cheek has not played much this season with eight starts in 20 Serie A appearances, but he is said to be valued in the dressing room which may earn him a contract extension at the San Siro.
In the same report, it was revealed that Chelsea also considered a move for Douglas Luiz, who ended up returning to Aston Villa instead.
It appears the club will continue to rely on the trio of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Andrey Santos while the likes of Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Dario Essugo recover from injuries.
Injury bug leads Chelsea to consider reinforcements
Superstar attacking midfielder Palmer is Chelsea’s most prominent player dealing with an injury, but their depth options are also set to miss time.
Lavia and Essugo are each projected to return to action sometime in February.
Chelsea, who seem to never have enough players, wanted to bring a new, experienced addition to their midfield group.
The club just agreed terms over a mutual contract termination with Raheem Sterling, and although he was frozen out of the group, it means there is even less experience at the club.
Loftus-Cheek has 157 career appearances in the Premier League, while Douglas Luiz has played 183 matches in England’s top flight.
New manager Liam Rosenior likely would have appreciated a player with that number of Premier League matches under his belt, as this is the coach’s third management job in four years of coaching.
But Chelsea are fifth in the table as it stands and with four of their next five matches being against West Ham, Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley, the club has a chance to pick up points.
