Chelsea demanded a whopping €33 million to sell Renato Veiga to Juventus in January, according to Italian media.

The Portugal international caused a stir at Stamford Bridge ahead of the winter transfer window when he surprisingly requested to leave Chelsea just six months after arriving from Swiss side Basel in a €14m deal.

Veiga had failed to regularly feature under Enzo Maresca and when he did play, he was said to be unhappy with his position. The 21-year-old reportedly felt that he would have better chances to become a starter for Portugal ahead of the 2026 World Cup if he were playing at centre-back rather than left-back.

After talks with Borussia Dortmund and interest from Premier League clubs, Veiga ultimately headed to Turin to join Juventus in a quite pricey loan deal for the Old Lady. The Serie A giants shelled out a €5m loan fee and did not even secure a purchase option.

The versatile defender has been brilliant for the Bianconeri so far and it has now been revealed that they had been interested in signing him permanently but ultimately baulked at Chelsea’s demands.

Chelsea wanted €33m for Veiga

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Chelsea were only willing to consider a permanent departure of Veiga for a whopping fee in the region of €33m plus potential bonuses.

Juventus are already considering returning to the negotiating table for Veiga in the future to try their luck again with a permanent offer but they are well aware that it won’t be easy to convince the Blues to sell.

Veiga himself is said to be open to staying at Chelsea despite his transfer request in January. The player just wanted to go out on loan to get regular minutes but is happy to remain in West London if he is given guarantees of game time.

The youngster has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €12.5m, so it is understandable why Juventus were unwilling to match Chelsea’s excessive demands. However, if he continues to perform at his current level, his stocks are bound to rise and, perhaps, so too will Juve’s willingness to pay up.
