Chivu was the only genuine choice for Inter on June 5

Cristian Chivu is set to sign a two-year contract as the new coach of Inter, but it was largely a decision made out of necessity more than conviction.

When Simone Inzaghi decided to walk away for a new experience at Al-Hilal, the Nerazzurri found themselves scrambling to find a suitable replacement.

Como refused to let Cesc Fabregas negotiate, as he is under a long-term contract, while Patrick Vieira was unconvinced about leaving Genoa for this adventure either.

Let us be honest and admit that with the Club World Cup commitments set to begin next week in the United States of America, there were few other genuine alternatives on the evening of June 5.

Inter backed into a corner for Chivu

Chivu can return to a club where he was already a player and a coach at youth team level, while he gets to double the €700,000 per season salary that he was on at Parma.

Any other tacticians on the wish list for Inter would’ve taken considerable time, which is a luxury the club simply does not have right now.

In the end, the Romanian was practically the only choice they could make in the circumstances.
